Formerly the Rockton Quarry of the Wake Stone Company, the site was an active granite quarry operation from the turn of the century until the early 1950's when the quarrying operations ceased and the quarry began to fill with water. The Town of Wendell then used the quarry lake as a water supply for the town in the 1970's and 1980's. On the way to the water entry, visitors will see the town's abandoned water filtration building and concrete holding tank. The quarry and surrounding land was purchased from the town by a private owner in 1997 and then by the current owners in 2010.
The lake contains bass, bluegill, mosquitofish, turtles, catfish - channel and blue, carp, freshwater eel, paddlefish and five large koi - 2 orange, 2 gold and a white. Impressive underwater cliffs and overhangs await exploration by divers. Rumor has it that the lake contains a crane, quarrying equipment, a motorcycle, stolen cars and even cremated remains! Since being open for diving in July 2017, a conveyor structure, large quarrying gears, a mine car and lots of pipes and metal cords have been found. A Piper airplane, short bus, full size school bus, Nascar fiberglass body and various platforms and smaller attractions have been added. Mystery Lake remains a largely unexplored natural wonder.
